The boundaries of language and thought: neural basis of inference making
نویسندگان
چکیده
Is human thought fully embedded in language, or do some forms of thought operate independently? To directly address this issue, we focus on inference making, a central feature of human cognition. In a 3T fMRI study we compare logical inferences relying on sentential connectives (e.g., not, or, if..then..) to linguistic inferences based on syntactic transformation of sentences involving ditransitive verbs (e.g., give, say, take). When contrasted with matched grammaticality judgments, logic inference alone recruited “core” regions of deduction (Brodmann Area 10p, 8m), while linguistic inference alone recruited perisylvian regions of linguistic competence, among others (BA 21, 22, 37, 39, 44, 45 and caudate). In addition, the two inferences commonly recruited a set of general “support” areas in fronto-parietal cortex (BA 6, 7, 8, 40, 47). The results indicate that logical inference is not embedded in natural language, while confirming the relative modularity of linguistic processes.

The Impact of Contextual Clue Selection on Inference
Linguistic information can be conveyed in the form of speech and written text, but it is the content of the message that is ultimately essential for higher-level processes in language comprehension, such as making inferences and associations between text information and knowledge about the world. Linguistically, inference is the shovel that allows receivers to dig meaning out from the text with...

Introduction: One of the vital skills which has an impact on emotional health and well-being is the regulation of emotions. In recent years, the neural basis of this process has been considered widely. One of the powerful tools for eliciting and regulating emotion is music. The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) is part of the emotional neural circuitry involved in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)....

متن کاملThe use of wavelet - artificial neural network and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system models to predict monthly precipitation
Precipitation forecasting due to its random nature in space and time always faced with many problems and this uncertainty reduces the validity of the forecasting model. Nowadays nonlinear networks as intelligent systems to predict such complex phenomena are widely used. One of the methods that have been considered in recent years in the fields of hydrology is use of wavelet transform as a moder...
